Daily Mail:
'Jeremy Brett is regarded as the greatest ever Sherlock Holmes. But he has been snubbed for a blue plaque by English Heritage."

A blue plaque is a permanent sign installed in a public place in the United Kingdom and elsewhere to commemorate a link between that location and a famous person or event, serving as a historical marker.

Jeremy Brett portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is regarded as the greatest ever, but failed to make the shortlist of those being considered gor a plaque, at a meeting which called for greater racial diversity of those who are honoured. But instead recommended a little -known trade unionist and women's right activist be added. Rumor has it Jeremy Brett is too white for a blue plaque, where there is no evidence that Jeremy Brett make the cut on grounds of ethnicity or gender..

English Heritage said:
" The Blue Plaque panel considers about 60 suggestions a year. All nominations are taken seriously, but only a certain number -around 12- can be put up every year."

This revelation has shocked Sherlock Holmes fans, which consider his to have been the definitive portrayal of  the detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who has his own blue plaque in South-East London.

Jeremy Brett's Holmes is fundamentally faithful to Doyle's original. The magnetism of his bravura performance attract a new generation of admirers to the stories. In the years to come it will be his face they see when they read the books, and it will be his voice they hear when the great detective speaks. A part of monument, that is the legend of Sherlock Holmes, now Brett's name indelibly carved on it.'

Anthony Horowitz, who was commisioned by estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write the Sherlock Holmes follow-up novels The House of Silk and Moriarty, said:
"Jeremy Brett was by far the greatest Sherlock. For this work alone, with or without a blue plaque, he never be forgotten."

" I have nothing but praise, I have received twelve plaques from twelve societies for being the best Holmes ever. I haven't heard any negative criticism (from America)..I was over there in 1985 and I think we had got as far as number seven ( in the first TV Series) and I was given the plaque for the best Holmes ever then by the Sherlockians and the Doylians."
